Not all of their "budget" .22 rifles will have serial numbers. All model 336's, and as far as I know all centerfire lever action rifles produced by Marlin, as well as lever action rimfire rifles made by them will have serial numbers.

You are correct, the Model 39A with a serial number beginning with 27 was made in 1973, and is safe to use the modern, high speed ammunition. The big hub-bub on the Model 39 and high speed ammunition is for guns in .22 caliber made prior to 1932.
