The Client (P2/P3/P4) uses their own Ember Tree and Weapon Mods. Any Ember / Ash they earn is taken back to their own save. Relics, Skills, and Weapons are all pulled from the Host's save. Personally I prefer the bow, though my friend that plays with me a lot normally uses the staff himself. If you do decide to dip into the staff, the Hailstone Armor skill is extremely powerful with it judging by what I have seen from said friend.
