How I get diamonds is 1) find as many drink zones as possible, 2) figure out a plan to hit all of them in an efficient manner, 3) harvest as many males as possible. Yes spawn is random. The way I have gotten them is through herd management. I'll stick with one animal the whitetail and only hunt whitetails. I'll only take the 2 biggest bucks out of that particular herd and move on. No females until I get that say 20th male kill then only one female.
