I don't think metal has higher HPs for furniture, but if your furniture is getting attacked, you've already lost. I'm 90% sure it's just an aesthetic choice. So, go with wood or stone for functionality at first and then make it look nice with metal/brick/concrete when you have an abundance -- assuming that you care.
