A Baldwin County sheriff's deputy died Sunday while trying to rescue several distressed swimmers in the Gulf of Mexico late Sunday afternoon.Deputy William "Bill" Smith, a 57-year-old who specialized in patrolling Gulf Coast beaches, and another deputy were working on Fort Morgan Peninsula west of Gulf Shores at about 6 p.m. when three swimmers got into trouble in the water.Three tourists, one from Tennessee and the other two from West Virginia, died after drowning in the Gulf over weekend.
