if you look at page 65, you can see that when the soot builds up too much from short trips, the DPF lamp will light. if the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) that looks like a little engine is lit, and you first post says there is some sensor problem, the issue could be that a sensor is not working.

Have two VE TDI's with race pipes. A common theme is loss of mpg's & longer warm up times associated with the EGR delete.
