I was gone from firelink shrine for a very long time. I think since my last visit I killed the belltower gargoyles, the demon by the blacksmith, the moonlight butterfly and explored all of the forest, and undead burg. When I went back to firelink shrine I approached the square pool in front of the giant crow.
Well yes, but if you look up the lore theory on Gundyr it essentially demonstrates his entire story in a clear, well presented post backed with evidence. Essentially, Gundyr came to guard the shrine during a dark age (since this cycle goes back and forth) and eventually was somehow corrupted by the abyss.
