Imperial Cataphracts are probably the best overall. I believe the Vlandians have slightly better stats but Cataphracts have better equipment and you also get the Buccelarii horse archers whereas Vlandians do not get horse archers.
Spearman is Heavy Spearman or Darkhan. Aserai Veteran infantry have a niche as a spearman with throwing option for excellent <T5 sweeping. Throwing shield infantry is heavy axeman or wildlings, axeman are tankier and do better in melee. Shock troop is context dependent, but fians and khans guard are in the same pool so its weird. Vlandia is my current choice because the mercenary mechanic was fin to try, the castle perk is good for an early kingdom and the debuff is currently a buff.
