Painted in 1966-1969, Ed Ruscha’s Burning Gas Station belongs to one of the most iconic series in twentieth-century art. Inspired by the gas stations that punctuated his drives between Los Angeles and his native Oklahoma, the present work is just one of just five Standard Stations the artist painted in the 1960s (a sixth followed in 1986-1987). A measure of how lionised the image of the Standard Station had become was shown when Ruscha’s painting Burning Gas Station was offered at auction in New York in 2007.
