When he's really scared, he passes out and his sleep mode is turned on. The reason why he can fight Kaifaku while being awake is because he's not scared of him at all, he's mad at him. 3. He says "I can tell it's a demon, but tanjiro said this box was more important than his life, so I'll stand by it". To me zenitsu is a character who's story is that even a weak character can be strong if their heart is in the right place.
